Colombo when it rains, which is often

Two monsoons, and neither of them ruins a visit. What rain in Colombo is really like, how to spend a wet hour, and why the rainy months are good value.

Some travellers cancel trips to Sri Lanka because of the word monsoon, but rain in Colombo is usually very different from what they imagine. Grey, rainy days are rare. More often, the rain lasts about an hour.

The two monsoons

The south-west monsoon runs roughly from May to September and is the one that affects Colombo and the west coast. The north-east monsoon, roughly from October to January, mainly affects the other side of the island, although the inter-monsoon weeks in October and November also bring thunderstorms to Colombo.

This makes May, June, October and November the wettest months in Colombo. A typical day in these months starts bright, clouds build after lunch, and a heavy downpour lasts around forty minutes. The evening that follows is fresh and noticeably cooler.

What to do with the hour

There is no need to go out in it. Most people in Colombo wait for the rain to pass, so it is a good time to be somewhere comfortable indoors.

The National Museum is an excellent choice. Arcade Independence Square is a restored colonial building with shops, cafés and air conditioning under one roof. Colombo City Centre has a cinema. And a spa treatment is especially relaxing while it rains outside.

Here, specifically

Our garden is planted and partly covered, so the tables under the trees at Amber Poolside can be used through most showers. At Cloud Café & Bar, part of the rooftop now has a glass roof, added during its refurbishment so that guests stay comfortable whatever the weather.

High tea, served from half past three to half past six, is also a very pleasant way to spend a rainy afternoon.

What to pack

Bring an inexpensive umbrella, sandals rather than closed shoes, and one long-sleeved layer, because indoor air conditioning can be cold and evenings after rain are cooler. You will not need a raincoat, as it quickly becomes too warm to wear.

Why the wet months are worth booking

Rates are lower, the city is quieter, the garden is at its greenest, and the light after a storm is beautiful. If you are planning a city stay rather than a beach holiday, May, June and November offer some of the best value of the year.
