What it took to become South Asia’s first CarbonNeutral® city hotel

How a small hotel measured every kilogram of carbon it produced, cut what it could and offset the rest, and why we mark the anniversary on World Environment Day.

Every year on 5 June, World Environment Day, we mark the date our CarbonNeutral® certification was first confirmed. It made Colombo Court the first city hotel in South Asia to reach that standard, and it remains the part of our story guests ask about most. Here is what it actually involved, in plain terms.

Measure first

You cannot offset what you have not counted. The first step was an independent assessment of the hotel’s greenhouse gas emissions by the Carbon Consulting Company in Colombo, carried out to the GHG Protocol, the international standard developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. It counted everything: the electricity we buy, the fuel our vehicles use, the gas in the kitchens, the waste we send away and the journeys our team make on the hotel’s behalf.

The result is a single figure in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Ours was comparatively low for a hotel of our size, because the building had already been designed to need less: shaded private courtyards instead of air-conditioned corridors, solar-heated water, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, and drinking water bottled in glass on site rather than trucked in as plastic.

Then reduce, then offset

The assessment comes with a management plan, which is where the real work sits. Each year we look at where the biggest numbers are and what can be cut, from inverter air-conditioning in the rooms to separating waste so that less goes to landfill. What remains is offset by buying verified carbon credits that fund emission-reduction projects elsewhere, so that the hotel’s operation over the year is balanced to net zero.

The certification is renewed annually, which means the measuring never stops. That is the point. A one-off certificate is easy to frame; a footprint that has to be counted again every twelve months keeps a small team honest.

What it means for a guest

Nothing about your stay changes, and that is deliberate. The pool is still cool, the rooms are still comfortable, and breakfast is still beside the water at Amber Poolside. The difference is in what your stay costs the world beyond our walls. If you would like to know what a carbon neutral hotel does day to day, we have written that up separately, and the whole approach is on our sustainability page.
