Your first spa visit, and what nobody tells you
What to wear, what happens to your clothes, how much pressure to ask for and whether to talk. Common first-time questions, answered clearly so you can relax.
Many people have never had a massage and feel unsure about asking the questions below. These questions are completely normal, therapists hear them often, and knowing the answers will help you relax and enjoy your treatment.
What do I wear?
A robe and slippers are provided in the treatment room, and there is a locker for your belongings. Under the towel, wear as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. Disposable underwear is available if you prefer. You stay covered throughout, with only the area being massaged uncovered, and your therapist will adjust the towel for you.
Do I have to talk?
No. You will have a short conversation before the treatment about any pain and the pressure you prefer. After that, most guests prefer silence, which is completely normal. If you would like to talk, that is fine too. Your therapist will follow your lead.
How much pressure should I ask for?
Probably more than you expect, so tell your therapist at the start. The most common comment we hear afterwards is that a guest wished they had asked for firmer pressure. You can say “firmer” or “lighter” at any time, and your therapist will adjust straight away.
Pressure can feel strong but should never feel sharp. Some discomfort in a tight muscle is normal. Pain is not, so please say if something hurts.

The practical things
Arrive ten minutes early, so there is time for the consultation and you receive your full treatment time.
Do not eat a heavy meal first. Lying face down for an hour after a large lunch is not comfortable.
Tell your therapist if you are pregnant, injured, recovering from surgery, taking blood thinners or allergic to nuts. Many massage oils are made with nut oils, so this is especially important.
The foot ritual at the start is part of the treatment, not an extra, and it is included within the treatment time.
Afterwards
Drink water and keep the rest of your day free. Try not to book a treatment an hour before dinner. The time after a treatment is part of the benefit, and at The Court Spa the plunge pool and the jacuzzi are a few steps from the treatment room. Alternating cold and warm water adds to the effect of the massage.
What to book first
Sixty minutes of Balinese massage, with firm pressure. You will feel a clear benefit, which is ideal for a first visit. We have written about the difference between Balinese and Ayurvedic massage if you would like to compare them.
The Court Spa is here. It is open daily from 9am to 9pm and welcomes non-residents as well as hotel guests.
