The Luxury Honeymoon Suite at Colombo Court, a four-poster bed against a deep blue wall with the bath beyond.

A honeymoon in Colombo, and the suite we keep for it

Most honeymooners see Sri Lanka from the beach and the hills. A night or two in the city is worth adding, and Suite 305 is where we put you.

If you have chosen Sri Lanka for your honeymoon, you have probably planned the beaches and the hill country already. We would gently suggest adding Colombo, either as your first stop after a long flight or as your last before you fly home. The city has a rooftop dinner, an evening walk along the sea and a very good breakfast to offer, and none of it requires a four-hour drive.

The suite

When you tell us it is your honeymoon, we keep Suite 305 for you. It is our Luxury Honeymoon Suite: 475 square feet, a four-poster king bed, and a bath that sits in the room itself rather than behind a door, so you can lie in it with the lights of the city beyond the window. There are two basins in the bathroom, a separate rain shower, and a private corner of the building that nobody walks past.

Every room here is a different shape, because the hotel was made from old office buildings rather than built from a plan. Suite 305 is the one with the most privacy and the best light, which is why it became the honeymoon suite.

A day here

Breakfast is beside the pool at Amber Poolside, under the trees, from seven. The pool is long enough to swim properly, and the jacuzzi and plunge pool are steps away. A couple’s treatment at The Court Spa can be booked for the afternoon, with two therapists working side by side in the same room.

In the evening, Cloud Café & Bar on the roof opens at half past five. Arrive for the sunset, stay for dinner under the glass roof and the sky.

And beyond the gate

Gangaramaya Temple and the lake are ten minutes away, the Dutch Hospital in Fort has restaurants along both sides of a seventeenth-century courtyard, and Galle Face Green at sunset is the best free evening in the city. Two days in Colombo sets it out in order, without rushing.
