What to pack for Sri Lanka, and what to leave behind
Thirty degrees and humid every day, temples with a dress code, cold air conditioning and sudden rain. A short packing list, since most things can be bought here.
The two most common packing mistakes for Sri Lanka are bringing too much and bringing the wrong things. Temperatures are between twenty-six and thirty-two degrees all year, and apart from sunscreen, most things cost less here than at home.
Clothes
Cotton and linen, in light colours. Synthetic fabrics are uncomfortable in this humidity. Pack less than you think you need and use the laundry service, which is quick and inexpensive.
One long-sleeved layer. Not for the daytime heat, but because indoor air conditioning can be strong, evenings after rain are cooler, and mosquitoes are more active at dusk.
Something that covers shoulders and knees. This is required at temples for both men and women, and a scarf wrapped over a sleeveless top is acceptable. You will also need to remove your shoes, so wear something easy to slip off.
Sandals rather than shoes. They are cooler, and you may need to remove your shoes at temples several times a day.

The small things that matter
High-factor sunscreen, which is expensive and hard to find here. Insect repellent, although it is widely available. A reusable water bottle, because our drinking water is filtered and bottled on site and you can refill it. A wide-brimmed hat. And a plug adaptor, unless your country uses the British three-pin socket.
What not to bring
A raincoat, as it quickly becomes too warm to wear. An umbrella, since you can buy one cheaply almost anywhere. Formal clothes, unless you are attending a wedding, because no restaurant in Colombo requires a jacket. And a heavy suitcase, if you plan to take the coastal train.
One thing about the rain
Rain here is usually heavy but short. Rather than waterproof clothing, you need shelter and about forty minutes. Plan an indoor activity for the middle of the afternoon, and the monsoon will hardly affect your trip.
