Five treatments at The Court Spa, and who each one is for

Balinese, hot stone, deep tissue, aromatherapy or reflexology: the differences matter more than the names suggest. Our therapists explain which to book and why.

A spa menu is a list of names, and most people book the one they have heard of. That is fine, but the treatments at The Court Spa do genuinely different things, and choosing the right one is most of the benefit. Our Balinese therapists describe the five they are asked about most.

Traditional Balinese massage

The foundation of everything we do. Long, flowing strokes, gentle stretching and acupressure with warm oil, over the whole body, for an hour. It improves circulation, eases stiffness and settles the nervous system. For: anyone who has just arrived, anyone who is tired, and anyone who has never had a massage and wants to start well.

Hot stone massage

Smooth basalt stones, heated and worked along the muscles, with the warmth reaching deeper than hands alone can. The treatment we are best known for. For: deep-seated tension, cold weather bodies arriving in a warm country, and people who find firm pressure uncomfortable but still need release.

Deep tissue massage

Slow, firm strokes into the deeper layers of muscle and fascia. It is not a relaxing hour in the usual sense; it is a productive one. For: chronic stiffness, sports recovery, desk backs and anyone who says “harder” to most massages.

Aromatherapy massage

Lighter pressure with a blend of essential oils chosen for the moment: citronella, cinnamon and lavender are the ones we reach for most. The scent does as much as the touch. For: stress rather than strain, a poor night’s sleep, and the evening before a flight home.

Foot reflexology with back, neck and shoulders

A combination for people short on time: pressure points on the feet, then the three places a day of travel or work tightens most. Forty-five minutes, and you walk out lighter. For: between meetings, after a day on your feet in the city, and first-day swelling from the flight.

The oils

We use Ayurvedic oils pressed in Sri Lanka, herbal spice blends, sandalwood and salt scrubs, chosen to suit the treatment and your skin. The spa is open from nine in the morning until nine at night, and two people can be treated side by side. Balinese or Ayurvedic and your first spa visit cover the questions that usually come next.
