Colombo Court Hotel & Spa Beach Cleaning Project On 9th June 2023
In Honor of World Ocean’s Day, our dedicated staff at Colombo Court Hotel & Spa conducted a beach cleaning project on 9th June 2023.
The team descended upon the Mt. Lavinia – Western province coastline in the early morning. The initiative recovered heaps of debris and castoff items, with single-use plastics & glass bottles encompassing over 50% of the total waste.
Sea pollution, also known as marine pollution, refers to the contamination of the ocean and its associated ecosystems with harmful substances or pollutants. It is a significant environmental issue that adversely affects marine life, human health, and the overall ecological balance.
One of the main sources of sea pollution is Plastic Pollution with the increasing use of single-use plastics and improper waste disposal practices have resulted in a massive accumulation of plastic debris in the ocean. This plastic waste poses a severe threat to marine animals, as they can ingest it or become entangled, leading to injuries, suffocation, and even death.
The consequences of sea pollution are far-reaching. It can result in the destruction of coral reefs, depletion of Fish populations, disruption of marine food chains, and the loss of biodiversity. Additionally, polluted seafood can pose health risks to humans who consume contaminated fish or shellfish.
The use of sustainable recycled materials plays a prominent role in the intimate design of our urban property, thus hospitality contributing to a pollution-free environment is a vital part of our mission statement as a carbon-free property. In our efforts to combat sea pollution and contribute to seeking a solution for this worldwide hazard, we conducted this CSR Project to honor World Ocean’s Day!
