This Earth Day, What Are You Up To?
Happy Earth Day 2017, everyone! We hope that you celebrate this beautiful place we call “Home” and come up with ways to personally fight the climate change.
Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on the 22 April was first celebrated in 1970 as proposed by peace activist John McConnel to honor the earth and peace. Since then many countries and communities celebrate Earth day, an entire day of activities focused on the environmental issues that the mother earth faces.
Notwithstanding the amount of unpleasant news about climate change, there are always reasons to celebrate Earth day this year.
According to a recent study supported by the UN, emphasizes that the worldwide investments towards renewable resources have helped to avoid the catastrophic 2nd degree rise on Earth’s temperature. However, we are not quite there yet, we’ve reached 15% of our goal. We still have a lot to do. Below are some great examples of how sustainability is a top priority.
Changing the way you drive
In the automobile industry, there are fully electric cars, Nissan Leaf, gas-electric hybrids, Honda Grace/ Prius and even the Mercedes Benz that are on Hybrid model. Also, the capital of Norway has plenty of recharging stations, bus-lane access, privilege parking and toll-free travel for electric vehicles. The Norwegian government initiated this project in 1990 to encourage electric vehicles as an effort to reduce pollution caused by gas powered cars, reduce traffic, and noise in urban areas. The primary objective is battling the rapid climate change. Norway holds the record for highest per capita of all battery only cars in the world, more than 100,000 cars for a country of 5.2 million residents. In 2016, nearly 40% of Norway’s newly registered cars were electric. The goal of this Scandinavian country is to phase out of fossil-fuel powered cars by 2025. Even the CEO of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, complimented the initiative by tweeting “What an amazingly awesome country. You guys rock!”
